The Philadelphia-based soul glitch wizard 5AM is back with Forge. This EP marks a step into the arena of halftime, and an opportunity to explore heavier bass and a darker musical tone. The sounds are more immediate, more relentless. And no wonder. After all, a war is being fought with a formidable adversary, creative resistance. These 3 tracks mark 3 triumphs against this familiar enemy won through determination, patience, and the unyielding desire to reach a goal, to forge ahead on the path. These tracks have been outfitted to channel that energy through sonic firepower provided by massive punchy drums, a barrage of auditory hallucinations, and turbo-charged bass stabs. As a group, these tracks ride the razor edge between moving melodic arrangements and battle-ready dance-floor heaters that stomp much harder than 5AM’s previous work. But then, just when you thought he wasn’t going to soothe you, the EP concludes with a victory lap of abstract synthesis riffs and 5AM’s signature horns provided by St4rfox, layering upon one another like crashing waves.
